Grape Juice

16 cups of washed grapes and 8 cups of water - bring mixture just to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Take off stove and pour into cheesecloth (4 layers) lined colander. Once drained return juice to pot and add 1 - 1 1/2 cups of sugar to taste. Bring back to just a boil and fill jars. Put lids on and do not tighten up. Place in a pot of boiling water and let simmer (process) for 10 minutes. Remove from pot and tighten lid. Set aside to cool - the lid will seal as it cools.

Here are my jars of juice - I got 3 full jars and 3/4 of another. I will add the remaining juice to the next batch. I cannot tell you just how amazing these grapes smell. My whole house has this wonderful grape aroma - and then when the grape juice is bubbling away I feel like I am in the Welch's grape juice factory. Definitely a smell I could get used to.

  1. Thank you for sharing that!! Now I'm convinced that our annual trek to Ohio is not quite enough... We must start making our annual trek, and then I can plan an extra trek there by myself, based on interesting fall harvest times.

I've never seen grape juice made, I can only imagine how incredible it must be. You ROCK!! Way to go for posting photos!

  2. Wow! I have never tried anything like this before, but it looks great! Maybe it's something the kids and I will do over their fall break next week?! :)

  3. I was telling Kami this morning that when thinking of grape juice, I pictured people in roman robes in ancient times, crushing grapes barefoot in big wooden tub. :o) I don't get out much!

  5. JD & Kami - lots of work - wonderful aroma. And my hands are still stained purple :0) Also, I have to limit the amount the kids drink - they love it. Hmmm, wonder if I can find more grapes.

  6. Hey, any chances there will be some of that left downstairs in the canning cupboard next summer? Shall I bribe Sadie to hide one somewhere? ;)
